We all know that eating out consistently is the quickest way to blow your food budget. While it is possible to save money eating out, eating on the run regularly is expensive and usually unhealthy. It can be hard to feed a family on a tight budget, but it is possible to cook delicious meals that are frugal and relatively quick to make.

1. Chili

Preparation: Heat oil over low to medium heat. Sauté your carrots, onions, then add the peppers and chili powder. Let it cook for 6 minutes or until the vegetables are tenderized. Add one to two cups of mushrooms.  Preparation Time: 55 minutes Cost: $7

2. Tomato Soup with Grilled Cheese

Preparation: Place butter on one side of your bread, then into a hot skillet. Add the cheese to the side, not butter. Cook until crunchy and cheese melts. Flip the bread over and cook until both sides are a nice golden brown. Preparation Time: 10 minutes. Cost: $4

3. Oatmeal with Raisins

Preparation: Cook your oats according to the box, add salt, raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar. Place it into a bowl and watch it disappear. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cost: around $4

4. Pancakes

Preparation: Beat egg yolks separate from white, then sieve baking soda, salt, sugar, and flour together and add butter, vanilla, and egg yolk into dry ingredients. Add butter. Beat egg whites and blend into the batter. After three minutes, flip and cook until the edges are solid and pancakes turn golden brown. Preparation Time: 13 minutes Cost: $3

5. Cabbage Soup

Preparation: Heat olive oil on medium in a pot, add your onion, garlic, and cook for five minutes on medium-low heat. Add 6 cups of chicken broth, then cabbage. Let cabbage simmer for about ten minutes or until tender. Add tomatoes and let it simmer for 15 minutes while stirring. Preparation Time: 30 minutes  Cost: $6
